A large campsite run by the Akureyri scout association's operating company, on the edge of the Kjarnaskógur recreational forest in the hills just south of Akureyri, about 10 minutes from the town centre. It is divided into 16 flat, tree-lined fields of mostly 3,000–4,000 m², with electricity on every field, several service houses and a service building at the entrance with kitchen, dining room, showers and a washing machine. There is a disposal point for chemical toilets and grey water, a boat pond, playgrounds, mini-golf and an 18-hole frisbee golf course. It is open all year; in winter only part of the site is open and campers stay on the cleared parking areas by the entrance.[3][4][7][5][1][2]

Winter openingOpen in winter Open in winter (own site, reisa.is, tjalda.is and ferdalag.is's official camper winter service list), but with reduced service: only part of the site (area A) is open, and once it snows campers stay on the parking areas around the entrance, which are ploughed as needed; the road up to Hamrar is normally cleared every morning. The parking areas have electricity and are close to toilets, showers, kitchen and dining room. Staff are on site on weekdays 8–16 and check and clean on evenings and weekends. Outside May–October the own site says to contact the warden (461 2264 / 863 0725) for access to the kitchen, showers and washing machine. Heavier vehicles must stay on the parking areas and the fields can be wet. Gates stop admitting vehicles at midnight; later arrivals stay on the parking area until morning.[3][4][5][1][2] (checked 2026-10-27)

Practical tips

  • You can pay in advance on reisa.is; you book a stay, not a specific pitch, and choose your spot on arrival, then check in with the warden for tickets for your unit and car. In winter, enter your number plate in the booking so the night checks don't knock on your door.[3][5] (checked 2026-10-27)
  • Car traffic within the site is banned 00:00–08:00 and the speed limit is 15 km/h; quiet hours are midnight to 08:00.[7][1] (checked 2026-10-27)
  • Under-18s must be accompanied by a parent or guardian (family campsite); dogs must be on a leash; open fires are not allowed.[3][1] (checked 2026-10-27)
  • Expect restricted access 18–28 July 2026 because of the National Scout Jamboree at Hamrar (20–26 July).[5] (checked 2026-10-27)
  • Reisa.is lists Bónus supermarket and the airport about 5 minutes away and the swimming pool and town centre about 10 minutes; Kjarnaskógur has cross-country ski tracks in winter.[5] (checked 2026-10-27)
  • The operator's other site, Þórunnarstræti in town, has closed.[3] (checked 2026-10-27)
