Winter Campsites Around Akureyri and Mývatn (2026–27)
Six campsites between Akureyri and Lake Mývatn say they take campers in winter 2026–27: Hamrar in Akureyri, Vaglaskógur in Fnjóskadalur, CJA at Laugar, and Vogar and Hlíð at Mývatn are listed as open all year, and Ártún near Grenivík says it is open all year except December and January.[1][2][3][4][5][6]
Winter service is reduced almost everywhere: Hamrar opens only area A and its parking areas, Vaglaskógur only a car park with no electricity, CJA only its gravel parking spaces, and Hlíð closes its reception.[7][8][3][5]
Scope: campsites in the Akureyri – Eyjafjörður – Fnjóskadalur – Reykjadalur – Mývatn area that tjalda.is or ferdalag.is's official camper winter service list show as open in winter, checked 2026-11-01. Not included because their 2026 season ends before winter (tjalda.is): Húsavík (15 May – 31 October), Hrafnagil / Eyjafjarðarsveit (20 May – 31 August, although it is on the ferdalag.is winter list), Systragil (26 May – 30 September) and Laugar Camping (10 May – 30 September).

| Campsite | Location | Winter status | Electricity | Dump station | Price (if confirmed) | Sources | Checked |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hamrar Campsite, Akureyri (Kjarnaskógur) | Akureyri | Open in winter Open in winter (own site, reisa.is, tjalda.is and ferdalag.is's official camper winter service list), but with reduced service: only part of the site (area A) is open, and once it snows campers stay on the parking areas around the entrance, which are ploughed as needed; the road up to Hamrar is normally cleared every morning. The parking areas have electricity and are close to toilets, showers, kitchen and dining room. Staff are on site on weekdays 8–16 and check and clean on evenings and weekends. Outside May–October the own site says to contact the warden (461 2264 / 863 0725) for access to the kitchen, showers and washing machine. Heavier vehicles must stay on the parking areas and the fields can be wet. Gates stop admitting vehicles at midnight; later arrivals stay on the parking area until morning.[7][9][10][1][11] | 2026-10-27 | ||||
| Vaglaskógur Campsite (Fnjóskadalur) | Fnjóskadalur, near Akureyri | Open in winter Winter service 15 September 2026 – 30 April 2027 with limited services: campers (motorhomes) only, on the car park opposite the bridge into Vaglaskógur (area F); heated toilets with hot water; no electricity at the campsite in winter; electric-car charging for a fee. Winter price 1,700 ISK per person.[2][8] | Listed by tjalda.is as 'Waste disposal for mobile homes'. Location, cassette use and winter availability: Unconfirmed.[2] | Unconfirmed | 2026-11-01 | ||
| Ártún Campsite (near Grenivík) | Grýtubakkahreppur, near Grenivík | Call ahead Listed on ferdalag.is's official camper winter service list, but its own text there says the campsite is open 1 May – 30 September and off-season stays are 'possible upon request, pending weather and other conditions'. tjalda.is says open all year except December and January. Call ahead; assume closed in December and January.[6][11] | Adult per night: 1,800 ISK[6] | 2026-11-01 | |||
| CJA Camping (Hjalli, Laugar) | Laugar, Reykjadalur | Open in winter Open all year (own site, tjalda.is, and ferdalag.is's official camper winter service list). In winter only the open gravel parking spaces are used, not the grass sections. The service house with toilets, showers and a small lounge is heated; the kitchen and dish-washing room is not.[3][12][11] | Yes – tjalda.is (Icelandic text) says there is a facility for sludge disposal ('aðstaða er til seirulosunar'). Its exact location and whether it suits cassette toilets: ask on arrival.[12] | 2026-11-01 | |||
| Vogar Campsite, Mývatn (Vogar Travel Service) | Mývatn (Vogar, near Reykjahlíð) | Open in winter Open in winter: the own site, its FAQ ('Our campsite is open all year around'), tjalda.is, reisa.is and ferdalag.is's official camper winter service list all say it is open all year, and the indoor kitchen and dining room are heated all year round. No source describes reduced winter service, snow clearing or which pitches are used in winter, so call +354 464 4399 (also the 24/7 emergency number) before arriving in deep winter. Check road conditions on road.is.[15][13][16][14][4][11] | 2026-10-28 | ||||
| Hlíð Campsite, Mývatn (Reykjahlíð) | Reykjahlíð, Mývatn | Open in winter Open all year according to tjalda.is, and listed on ferdalag.is's official camper winter service list. The reception is closed in winter; information is on a notice on the reception door and on the website. Which facilities (shower building, kitchen tent, electricity) are available in winter is not stated: Unconfirmed, so call ahead.[5][11] | UnconfirmedNo chemical-toilet or grey-water disposal is mentioned on the own site, tjalda.is or ferdalag.is. | 2026-11-01 |
Which one to pick in winter
- You want an indoor kitchen and showers in winter: Hamrar has a kitchen and dining room in the service building (outside May–October you get access through the warden), and Vogar's indoor kitchen and dining room are heated all year.[7][15] (checked 2026-10-27, 2026-10-28)
- You need electricity: Hamrar's winter parking areas have electricity. Vaglaskógur has no electricity at the campsite in winter. At CJA, Hlíð and Ártún, whether power is available in winter is Unconfirmed.[10][8][2] (checked 2026-10-27, 2026-11-01)
- You need to empty a cassette toilet: Hamrar and Vogar both list a chemical-toilet disposal point, and Ártún and CJA list sludge disposal on site. Vaglaskógur is listed with 'waste disposal for mobile homes', but its winter availability is Unconfirmed. No disposal point is listed for Hlíð.[1][13][6][12][2] (checked 2026-10-27, 2026-10-28, 2026-11-01)
- You want the lowest listed price: CJA charges 1,900 ISK per adult plus 400 ISK per unit and 400 ISK lodging tax, Vaglaskógur 1,700 ISK per person in winter plus 400 ISK lodging tax and a 500 ISK registration fee, and Ártún 1,800 ISK per adult plus 400 ISK lodging tax.[3][8][6] (checked 2026-11-01)
- You want to stay right at Mývatn: Vogar and Hlíð are both open all year. Hlíð is by the village of Reykjahlíð, a 5-minute walk from the tourist information centre and supermarket, but its kitchen is a tent and its reception is closed in winter.[4][5][11][17] (checked 2026-10-28, 2026-11-01)
Practical tips
- Vaglaskógur takes bookings only through Parka, but on 1 November 2026 Parka said online booking had not been activated, so phone +354 860 4714 first.[8][2] (checked 2026-11-01)
- Ártún's two listings disagree: tjalda.is says all year except December and January, while ferdalag.is gives 1 May – 30 September with off-season stays on request. Call +354 892 3591 before going.[6][11] (checked 2026-11-01)
- At Hamrar, gates stop admitting vehicles at midnight; later arrivals stay on the parking area until morning.[7] (checked 2026-10-27)
- Check road conditions and closures before each drive on umferdin.is, the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration's traffic site, and consider leaving a travel plan on safetravel.is.[18][19] (checked 2026-11-01)
