Iceland Campsites for Campervans

Guide · checked 2026-10-23

Campsites Open in Winter on Iceland's South Coast (2026–27)

Most Icelandic campsites close for the winter, and the South Coast has some notable gaps. Vík's village campsite says plainly that it is closed in winter (open 20 April – 1 November 2026). Hvolsvöllur's season ends on 1 November, and Kirkjubær II at Kirkjubæjarklaustur is open March – November only.[1][2]

This guide lists the South Coast campsites (Ring Road, Hveragerði to Höfn) that an official listing or the campsite itself says take campers in winter, plus the well-known ones that don't, so you can plan around them. The official 'Camper winter service' listings often use loose wording such as 'depending on weather' or 'upon request', and some entries conflict with the campsite's own season dates. Wherever a source is vague or contradicts another, the site is marked Call ahead rather than Open.[3][4]

Scope: campsites along the Ring Road (Route 1) between Hveragerði and Höfn, plus Fljótshlíð. Golden Circle and inland sites (e.g. Úthlíð, Hraunborgir, Skjól, Þingvellir) are not covered here and are in the backlog for a separate guide.

Open in winter: the campsite or an official listing states it is open through winter. Call ahead: listed as open in winter, but the wording is vague or sources conflict. Shoulder season only: open into late autumn or from early spring, not all winter. Closed in winter: published season ends before winter.

Practical winter tips

What travellers ask

Travellers regularly ask this. In r/VisitingIceland threads, people planning April and November campervan trips report finding no winter campsite in Vík and being pointed to Skógar and Kirkjubæjarklaustur instead. One commenter (Jan 2024) said Kirkjubæjarklaustur was also closed that winter. Another advised using tjalda.is and contacting campsites to confirm they are open: 'Do not wing this!'[29][30] (checked 2026-10-23)

Winter seasons, prices and facilities can change at short notice. Contact the campsite before relying on it, especially sites marked Call ahead.
