Iceland Campsites for Campervans

Campsites Open in Winter in Iceland (All Regions, 2026–27)

Iceland's Tourist Board publishes an official 'Camper winter service' list on ferdalag.is. On 30 October 2026 it had 38 entries, mostly campsites but also a few businesses that are not campsites, such as the Activity Park in Reykjavík.[1]

Being on that list does not always mean a campsite is open in winter. For at least six listed campsites, the tjalda.is campsite directory gives a summer-only season, for example Hólmavík (15 May – 15 September), Geysir (15 May – 15 September) and Laugarvatn (20 May – 1 October). This guide shows each campsite's sourced winter status and flags those conflicts, so you know whom to call before driving.[1][2][3][4]

Scope: every campsite with its own page on this site that is open, partly open or call-ahead in winter, plus three well-known campsites that are closed, then every campsite on the official winter list that we have not profiled yet, grouped by what tjalda.is says about its season. Regional detail is in the South Coast and Keflavík Airport guides.

Campsites on this site: winter status

Open in winter: the campsite or an official listing states it is open through winter. Call ahead: listed as open in winter, but the wording is vague or sources conflict. Shoulder season only: open into late autumn or from early spring, not all winter. Closed in winter: published season ends before winter.

Egilsstaðir

Open in winter
Open in winter: the own site and FAQ ('open all year round with facilities open 24/7'), tjalda.is, reisa.is and ferdalag.is's official camper winter service list all agree. Zone P (the car park) is the winter zone, used when the main zones are wet or covered with snow, with electricity posts for 5 vehicles at the entrance to the main area. In low season (November to March per the own site) the reception may be closed on some days; you then pay by card at the self-service terminal or in cash in the honesty box. In winter, fresh water comes from a hose inside next to the washing machines. Check road conditions on road.is.[47][48][49][46][1]
Yes – 2,000 ISK per 24 h per camper unit, not included in the nightly rate. In the winter zone (P, the car park) an electricity post at the entrance to the main area has connections for 5 vehicles.[45][48][49][46]

No source describes reduced winter service, snow clearing or which pitches are used in winter, so call +354 464 4399 (also the 24/7 emergency number) before arriving in deep winter. Hamrar Campsite, Akureyri (Kjarnaskógur)

Open in winter
Open in winter (own site, reisa.is, tjalda.is and ferdalag.is's official camper winter service list), but with reduced service: only part of the site (area A) is open, and once it snows campers stay on the parking areas around the entrance, which are ploughed as needed; the road up to Hamrar is normally cleared every morning. The parking areas have electricity and are close to toilets, showers, kitchen and dining room. Staff are on site on weekdays 8–16 and check and clean on evenings and weekends. Outside May–October the own site says to contact the warden (461 2264 / 863 0725) for access to the kitchen, showers and washing machine. Heavier vehicles must stay on the parking areas and the fields can be wet. Gates stop admitting vehicles at midnight; later arrivals stay on the parking area until morning.[56][57][58][55][1]
Yes – electricity on all fields (three-pin plugs per tjalda.is; reisa.is says blue sockets) and on the winter parking areas; 1,500 ISK per night[55][58][56]
Yes – disposal point for chemical toilets and grey water from campers and caravans ('Losun fyrir ferðaklósett'); exact location on site not stated[55][58][1]
Adult per person per night: 2,500 ISK (2,200 ISK per night after the first if several nights are bought at once)[55][56]
2026-10-27

On the official winter list and 'open all year' on tjalda.is (not profiled here yet)

These campsites are on the ferdalag.is winter list, and tjalda.is also says they are open all year. Two independent listings agree, but we have not yet checked prices or winter facilities, so treat them as call ahead.[1][59] (checked 2026-10-30)

On the official winter list, but tjalda.is gives a summer season

For these campsites the two sources disagree. The season below is what tjalda.is shows for 2026. Do not plan a winter night here without confirming directly with the campsite.[1][59] (checked 2026-10-30)

On the official winter list, with no current season on tjalda.is

Tjalda.is says that Skjól, Þingvellir and Fjalladýrð (Möðrudalur) are not active participants in 2026, so its information on them 'may be outdated'. For Grindavík and Fossatún it gives no season dates and does not list them as open all year. Winter status for all five is Unconfirmed.[69][70][71][72][73] (checked 2026-10-30)

Winter tips

What travellers ask

Winter camping is one of the most common campervan questions. In r/VisitingIceland threads, people planning November and April trips report finding no winter campsite in Vík and being pointed elsewhere, and one reply advised checking tjalda.is and contacting campsites to confirm they are open: 'Do not wing this!'[76][77] (checked 2026-10-30)

Winter seasons and services change at short notice, and the official winter list and tjalda.is often disagree. Contact the campsite before relying on it, especially anything marked Call ahead or Unconfirmed.
